Essay Costs and Benefits of Globalization and Localization

Globalization is unstoppable. Even though it may be only in its early stages, it is already intrinsic to the world economy. We have to live with it, recognize its advantages and learn to manage it, said Maria Livanos Cattaui in her article, The global economy - an opportunity to be seized (Business World, 1997). Many authorities agree that as the world enters into the twenty-first century, many economic, political, and cultural changes will take place due to what some people are simply calling the latest buzzword. The fact that globalization exists is not necessarily the important issue here. Rather, the worlds eyes must focus on costs and benefits of both globalization and localization, and how countries are affected by both of these†¦show more content†¦It is clear by these statistics, as well as many others, that globalization has greatly improved the world economy in general. This global economic improvement could have incredible positive effects on poverty. For example, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has estimated that five hundred to six hundred million people in developing countries have received income levels that are above the poverty line in the last ten years (Cattaui). On the political level, globalization encourages societies to find new ways of administrative control. Because new international institutions constantly have to develop new methods of administration, countries are encouraged by globalization to develop new ways of establishing effective democratic control over them. This need for cooperation between countries allows them to form new political relationships that benefit all parties involved. In addition, globalization paves the way for establishing political allied relationships with other countries. Such an alliance is necessary during times of war or economic crisis, as countries assist each other by providing either military or economic support to help maintain stability in a country of need. A more detailed example of this alliance benefit is discussed later. In addition to economic and political benefits, globalization has established social benefits as well.
